Plants in the Bog
A blanket of peat moss with blooming sundews is a typical sight in the bogs. © NLWKN
The secreted drops of the sundew imitate dewdrops and lure insects that then get stuck. The sundew gets its nutrients by digesting insects. © NLWKN
Purple moor grass is often to be found in the bogs, but can also be found in the Alps at altitudes of up to 2500 m. © Elke Freese
The thin leaved cottongrass is a classic plant in the bogs. It blooms for a short season between March and May. © Elke Freese
The seeds of the thin-leaved cottongrass are distributed by the wind.
The thin-leaved cotton grass also spreads quickly through runners. © Elke Freese
Candlewicks were once made out of the cotton from the thin-leaved cotton grass. © www.pro-t-in.de
Tussock cottongrass is important for the renaturation of raised bogs because as pioneer plants they grow on areas without vegetation. © NLWKN
The nectar of common heather contains relatively little sugar and this produces the strong flavour of the honey. © NLWKN
The cross-leaved heath is an endangered species and only grows in the endangered nutrient poor bogs.
